The Mombasa County Assembly has passed  a motion that seeks to remove sex workers from the streets, rehabilitate them and help them pursue other ways of fending for themselves.

Tononoka MCA Saad Faraj said on Tuesday that his motion, passed on Tuesday,  intends to ensure sex workers in the county are assisted economically and to get off the streets.
According to the MCA, “Mombasa is a religious town’’ but the metropolitan nature of the tourism hub has attracted vices such as prostitution.
“We must ensure we deal with this menace which has also led to child prostitution,” he said.
Seconding the motion, nominated MCA Fatma Swaleh said prostitutes  pose a danger to the family.  Ms Swaleh said HIV prevalence is high in the county due to prostitution.
However, her nominated colleague Mary Akinyi opposed the motion arguing that most sex workers fend for their families from proceeds of their “work” and would be deprived of their right to earn a living.
Mr Faraj was advised by temporary Speaker  Fadhili Mwalimu to consult with the Budget committee and fast track the matter.
He said he was happy the motion passed with majority of MCAs supporting his call.
