Kabaka Mutebi By Stephen KafeeroKampala- The
Kabaka of Buganda, Ronald Muwenda Mutebi, has warned against what he
described as re-emerging acts of child sacrifice and disappearance of
children in the country. Speaking at the annual opening of the
24th Lukiiko (Parliament) at Bulange-Mengo yesterday, the Kabaka
challenged government to bring the culprits to justice. “We have
began hearing stories of child sacrifice, disappearance and torture of
children. It is high time government reprimanded the culprits,” he said. Isolated
reports of children being murdered on the premise that it brings wealth
to the perpetrators have become common. Several people such as
businessman Kato Kajubi have been convicted of the heinous crime.
Kato Kajubi is currently serving a life prison sentence. Ten cases of
child sacrifice were recorded in 2013, according to police. The force is
yet to release last year’s crime report. The ceremony The
Kabaka arrived at Bulange amid pomp and glamour and was flanked by
members of the royal family and Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga. Garbed
in his ceremonial red robe, the monarch waved to his subjects including
kingdom ministers, MPs, kingdom chiefs and other dignitaries who stood
up as he made his way to the throne in the packed House. Other
kingdom subjects followed the events on large screens erected outside
the building at Bulange and live broadcasts on television and radio. The
opening of the Lukiiko (parliament) marks the formal start of the
Lukiiko year and the Kabaka’s speech sets out his government’s agenda,
outlining the areas the kingdom should focus on. While opening the
23rd Lukiiko last year, the Kabaka raised concerns of the unemployed
youths taken abroad as casual laborers but instead end up as slaves. A
report about the same has since been compiled, according to Kingdom
officials. SOURCE: DAILY MONITOR
