GULU.
Five-year-old Joram Ogenrwot on Friday died after a nursing student injected him with undiluted quinine drug at Gulu Regional Referral Hospital.

The deceased was in top class at Police Nursery School in Gulu Town. His mother, Brenda Adee, who took him to hospital, said all was well until Thursday last week when her son developed fever and was rushed to St Monica Clinic where doctors diagnosed him with malaria on Friday morning.
She said doctors put the deceased on quinine medication and later referred them to Gulu hospital.
Ms Adee added that when they reached the Acute Care Unit, the doctor [whose name has been withheld] booked them an appointment to return at 9pm for the second dose of medication.
According to Ms Adee, she returned at 9pm but on reaching, the doctor told her to buy two vials of quinine from a private pharmacy since the hospital had run out of stock for quinine drugs. “When I returned with the quinine vials, the doctor referred me to the nursing student. The nurse broke the vial, drew medicine using a syringe and injected my son on his left hand but before finishing, the boy collapsed and was pronounced dead minutes later,” Ms Adee said.
She believes her son died as a result of the hospital’s management failure to supervise the nursing student who wasn’t qualified.
Mr Godfrey Binaisa Okwonga, the father of the deceased, said they reported the matter to police under SR49/20/8/2016.

The hospital’s administrator, Mr Muhammad Mubiru, regretted the incident, but noted that the mother of the boy forced the nurse to administer the injection. “We don’t believe the allegations being labelled against us, there is no way the nurse can make such mistake to kill. This facility is not for killing people,” Mr Mubiru said.
