Rural Electrification Authority (REA) has said 22,249 public primary schools have so far been connected to electricity.
REA said another 646 schools are awaiting transformers and commissioning before being connected to the power grid.
Another group of 233 public primary schools were newly identified and will be connected in July.
In the notice, REA is also appealing for the public for information on schools that are not connected to electricity and are not in the list of the remaining institutions.
The Authority has asked the public to post the information on its website by July 20
“When the project started the data available then indicated a total of 19,000 public primary schools. Since then more schools have been identified and the number currently stands at 23,375 public primary schools,” a public notice published in the local dailies Tuesday stated.
REA Chairman Dr Simon Gicharu said all public primary schools in the country will have electricity connection by August this year.
“Work slowed down a bit due to shortage of line construction materials. Arrangements have been made to acquire the missing materials by around mid-July 2016 and they are expected to be completed by the end of August 2016,” Dr Gicharu said.
The government is banking on the power project to drive its laptops project to enhance information and communications technology uptake in schools.
