National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale has said legislators support Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i's push for reforms that aim at preventing examination malpractice, dismissing calls for early closing of schools.

Speaking at County High School in Garissa on Saturday during a prize-giving day, Mr Duale said cartels are behind increasing cases of schools fires because loopholes aiding wrongdoing have been closed by the minister.
“As Parliament, we are fully behind the CS Matiang'i since he has brought reforms and is much better than his predecessors. We know cartels have been minting millions in exam malpractice and have now turned to burning of schools,” he said.
He also criticized Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) Secretary-General Wilson Sossion for agitating for premature closure of schools, saying he does not have the authority to do so.
“There is big difference between Sossion and Matiang’i, who was nominated and vetted by Parliament. I would like to tell Sossion that it’s the government that makes and implements policies, their work is just to represent teachers,” he said.
The Garissa Town MP said closing schools will be unfair to many students in the country as only a few had their dormitories set ablaze. He urged police to be vigilant and to ensure culprits are brought to justice.
The legislator urged the students not to burn school property because it will be utilised by others.
