CONGOLESE FISHERIES OFFICERS KILL ZAMBIAN FISHERMAN

By Misheck Wangwe in Kitwe
A 41-YEAR-OLD fisherman of Nchelenge has died after Congolese fisheries authorities allegedly beat him up and threw him into the Luapula River.

Luapula Province police commissioner Malcolm Mulenga identified the deceased as Morgan Kalifungwa of Mupolombo fishing camp at Chisenga Island, who was caught for illegal fishing activities.
He said Kalifungwa, who was in the company of other unknown fishermen, was confronted by Congolese fisheries authorities for violating the annual fish ban.
Mulenga said Kalifungwa was allegedly beaten before he was thrown in the Luapula River and left for dead. He said Kalifungwa’s body was retrieved on Sunday.
“The officers that rushed to the scene found that the body had already been retrieved and dumped at Kashitu village on the Congolese soil by the deceased’s aggrieved family members in protest. We are seriously investigating this matter, but efforts of the police are being frustrated by the lack of cooperation by the local people and those violating the fish ban. Such killings are unacceptable and we are working round the clock to establish what exactly happened,” Mulenga said.
He said police officers would still seek an audience with Kalifungwa’s family to solicit any information that could lead to the arrest of the assailants.
Meanwhile, police in Nchelenge district are looking for a man, only identified as Chongo, for murder.
Mulenga said the suspect, who is currently on the run, allegedly beat up his wife, Precious Mwenya Kabaso, of Shimalita village in chief Kambwali’s area. Mulenga explained that Kabaso, 27 was later admitted to St Paul’s Mission Hospital where she died.
