Masaka. The Kabaka of Buganda, Ronald Muwenda Mutebi, has advised his subjects to prevent malaria by sleeping under mosquito nets and clearing bushes around their homes.

While presiding over activities to mark the Buganda Health Day in Masaka District at the weekend, Kabaka Mutebi said prevention was better than cure and stressed the importance of general hygiene.
“Every home must have clean toilet facilities and a drying rack for the plates and cooking utensils. This does not require complicated technology to carry out since we can do it ourselves,” the Kabaka said.
He was reacting to a speech made by Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga who said many people in the kingdom still suffer from preventable diseases like typhoid, dysentery and malaria.
Dr Ben Kiwanuka Mukwaya, the kingdom health minister, who led a team of health workers that carried out health camps in Buganda, told the Kabaka that 75 per cent of the diseases that had been treated during the exercise were preventable through keeping proper hygiene.
More than 20,000 people received free treatment.
The traditional chief of Masaka region, Mr Vincent Mayega, also told the Kabaka that there was increasing domestic violence in the region mainly caused by drug and alcohol abuse.
Kabaka Mutebi urged his subjects to spend their time doing profitable work instead of drinking alcohol and taking drugs.
