285 CITIZENSHIPS GRANTED IN 2 YEARS

The government of Tanzania has granted citizenships to 285 immigrants in two years, an official with the Immigration Department has disclosed.


Spokesperson for the Immigration Department, Abbas Irovya told journalists yesterday that the citizenships were granted between 2013 and 2014.

He said in 2013 and 2014 a total of 98 and 187 immigrants were granted citizenships respectively.

The official added that his office is in the last stages of procedures of granting citizenships to Burundian refugees who were promised by President Jakaya Kikwete in September this year.

He however assured that the department also oversees operations at the boarders and entry points to control an influx of migrants from various African countries. He said those entering the country are provided with documents which show the duration of their stay in the country.

The official further noted that in 2013, the immigration department managed to arrest 38, 776 foreigners who were attempting to enter the country without legal documents.

On the other hand, he said this year alone, about 466 Tanzanians who were living abroad have been deported back to the country due to violation of immigration laws.

Regarding revenues collected by the Immigration Department, the official said in 2013/14 fiscal year his office managed to collect 93bn/- by the end of the current financial year which ends in June 2015, they have targeted to collect 95bn/-, noting that they have so far collected 44bn/.

He noted that the revenues collected by the department come from visa and passport fees among other things.

He said his office also educates the public on its activities, “We also educate the public on the importance of having passports because it could be used as one’s identity… we also urge them to handle such documents with extra care.”

He called upon the public to immediately report to the immigration department once they have their passports stolen. He said once stolen, one can be provided with a new one after following the required procedures.
