FEASIBILITY STUDY FOR KASANGA PORT REHABILITATION COMPLETE

THE Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) has conducted a feasibility study for the purpose of improving Kasanga Port, in Kalambo District, Rukwa Region.

The remarks were made by the Minister for Transport, Dr Harrison Mwakyembe, in Parliament, when responding to a basic question from Kalambo legislator (CCM), Mr Josephat Kandege, who wanted to know the government’s plans to address challenges facing the Port.
Dr Mwakyembe said the government recognizes shortage of facilities at Kasanga Port, and already, through TPA, the government has renovated a berth with a depth of 20 metres, for mooring vessels at Kasanga Port, whose work was completed in 2010.
He said that construction of two depots with capacity of storing 3,000 tonnes each, bring the total of depots at Kasanga Port to three, with the capacity of handling 7,500 tonnes.
The Minister added that the government has also provided the Port with one fork lift and one mobile crane in an effort to reduce shortage of working equipment.
He said that in the financial year 2014/15, the Ports Authority has set aside 130m/-for the purpose of purchasing a new fork lift with the capacity to carry three tonnes, and construction of staff houses.
“Other equipment such as terminal tractor and vehicles are in Ports Authority purchase plans,” he explained.
Dr Mwakyembe said that among TPA’s long term plans is the feasibility study which was conducted by Ciril Risk & Infrastructure Solutions Ltd which completed its work in 2013.

“Among things that are expected to be improved include increasing the depth of current berth which allows mooring of one vessel, but once the depth is increased it will allow two or more ships to dock,” he explained.
