LISBON, PORTUGAL
JUVENTUS forward Cristiano
Ronaldo was forced off the pitch with what appeared to be a hamstring injury
during Portugal's 1-1 draw with Serbia in the Euro 2020 qualifiers.
Ronaldo pulled up when
sprinting after the ball and was substituted in the 31st minute.
Serbia led at the time after
Dusan Tadic's early penalty but the hosts equalised through a spectacular
25-yard strike from Danilo Pereira.
"I'll know more in 24 or
48 hours," said Ronaldo. "It happens. If you go out in the rain you
get wet. I'm calm, I'll be back in one or two weeks."
His club, Juventus, are 15
points clear at the top of Italy's Serie A and face Ajax in the Champions
League quarter-finals.
The first leg takes place in
Amsterdam on 10 April, with the return leg in Turin on 16 April.
Euro 2016 winners Portugal have
begun their defence with two draws at home in their qualifying group after
being held to a scoreless draw by Ukraine on Friday.
Portugal thought they had a
penalty when the referee pointed to the spot after the ball hit the outstretched
arm of Antonio Rukavina from Andre Silva's close-range header.
However, after conferring with
an assistant, the official reversed his decision.
The hosts were lucky to finish
the game with 11 men after Pepe, who was booked in the first half, caught Tadic
on the ankle in the 57th minute, but he escaped further punishment.
Elsewhere, a 68th-minute goal
from Olivier Giroud gave him the title of France's third highest goalscorer of
all time as he scored in an easy 4-0 home win over Iceland.
Samuel Umtiti put the hosts
ahead with a glancing header from Kylian Mbappe's left-wing cross, before
Giroud saw the ball bounce off him and into the net following Benjamin Pavard's
cross.
Mbappe added a third from
Antoine Griezmann's pass, before Griezmann netted a fourth shortly afterwards.
Giroud, 32, has now scored 35
times in 89 international appearances.
The Chelsea striker's
68th-minute goal had a touch of fortune about it as Pavard's cross was palmed
out by Iceland goalkeeper Hannes Halldorsson hit Giroud and went in.
Nevertheless, the goal took him
clear of David Trezeguet's total of 34, with only Michel Platini (41 goals in
72 appearances) and Thierry Henry (51 goals in 123 matches) ahead of him.
France have now scored eight
goals in two qualifying games for the 2020 European Championship, having beaten
Moldova 4-1 in their opening qualifier on Friday.
Didier Deschamps' side lead
Group H on goal difference, ahead of Turkey, who also have six points from
their two games.
