KAMPALA. The United Kingdom has announced a £5.8 million [Shs25 billion] relief aid package for refugees from the crisis laden South Sudan and Democratic Republic of Congo.
The British High Commissioner to Uganda, Ms Alison Blackburne, said the funds will cater for emergency food assistance for up to 360,000 refugees who fled the two the countries in recent years.
Uganda commended“Uganda is receiving unprecedented numbers of refugees who have left their homes and made long and dangerous journeys to come here,” Ms Blackburne was quoted in a statement.
She further commended the government and UN agencies for their continued support towards providing the “much needed relief and security to the refugees.” Uganda is home to about 130,000 refugees from South Sudan who fled hostilities between President Salva Kirr’s forces and forces loyal to former vice president Riek Machar since 2013.
The relief package will also cater for 1,180 refugee children from DRC who will receive supplementary feeding for two months. Another 2,500 South Sudanese refugee children will receive supplementary feeding for two months.
