Kampala. The oil and gas sector has various opportunities that women should take up to better their livelihood and sustain their families, Energy minister Irene Muloni has said.
Ms Muloni said women should not leave such an industry to be dominated by men since women too have great potential to contribute towards the growing trade.
The minister made the remarks during the Uganda Women Entrepreneurs Association Limited (Uweal) dinner last Friday in Kampala.
“Women have the attitude and skills to venture into the business that can create wealth for this country. They can render services and even open up consultancies to better their livelihood,” Ms Muloni said adding, “We need to catch up with the men.”
She also noted that women had no excuse for not tapping into these opportunities since their population is higher than the men in the country.
“Our presence as women in this country needs to be felt more through our deeds since our number is greater than that of the men,” she stated.
Ms Muloni also hailed the women in Uweal for coming together to advise, share ideas, support and encourage one another on how to improve, sustain and grow their different businesses.
The dinner which was a climax of a two-day conference themed “inspiring and promoting a spirit of excellence among business women” brought together women entrepreneurs including business executives and outstanding women leaders in Uganda and other African countries.
Provisional results of the recently concluded national population and housing census indicate that females constitute the biggest percentage of the total population of the country, with 51 per cent compared to males at 49 per cent.
