AUTHORITIES SET TO REVOKE TITLE DEEDS OF NEGLACTED LANDS

Monduli. Northern Zone’s Land Commissioner Office has initiated an inspection and verification exercise to identify undeveloped lands, including farms, for the purpose of revoking their title deeds.
The Northern Zone Land Commissioner, Ms Dorothy Wanzala, said such measures were taken after receiving complaints on lands being undeveloped in various districts.
“After a thorough inspection and verification, the report on these lands will be taken to the President who is empowered to revoke title deeds,” said the Land Commissioner adding, “We want to bring to an end a practice by some few people monopolising large chunks of land without developing them while thousands don’t have even a piece for daily basic needs.”
Commissioner Wanzala said the exercise will be fulfilled by March next year, appealing to the public to be patient to allow her office in collaboration with district councils and other stakeholders including Ujamaa Community Resource Team (CRT) and Tanzania Nature Conservancy (TNC), to completing the process.
The official made these comments last Saturday, shortly before handing over a customary land tenure certificate to Naitolia Village in Monduli District, Arusha Region.
“This certificate will not only help to protect the village land and pasture areas against invasion, but will also open the way for other Maasai pastoralist communities’ villages to plan and have best use of their land,” said Wanzala
She appealed to other NGOs to help people where they operate to achieve their basic needs as UCTR and TNC have done by supporting pastoralists, hunters and gatherers in obtaining title deeds for their lands.
Recently, a retired Naitolia Village chairman, who initiated  the land use plan, Mr Ndaeto Ngarasaa, promised to cooperate with the current leadership to achieve the goals of the plan and efficient use of land in order to end long existing conflicts involving pastoralists, farmers and investors in the village.
Acting UCRT director Edward ole Lakaita, said his NGO would continue with efforts to make sure that all pastoralists, hunters and gatherers’ villages get land use plans.
