MORE than a thousand Windhoek residents, led by former Swapo Party Youth League secretary for information Job Amupanda, turned up at the City of Windhoek to take part in the mass submission of land applications.
Anticipated the big turn out, city officials set up application points on the lawn of the City of Windhoek premises.Although some senior citizens were spotted, the applicants was predominantly young.

One of the land hopefuls Destiny Amadhila said that she has been renting for over 10 years because she cannot afford to buy a house and hopes to be considered so that she can build her children a house.

Amupanda told The Namibian that although they knew the applicants would come in masses, the crowd has exceeded their expectations. He vowed to the applicants that the 'Affirmative Repositioning' group will stay at the municipality premises in central Windhoek until the last application has been submitted.

The submissions were so overwhelming that only some people could receive receipts for their applications while others have to wait for at least a week to get theirs.

“We will give the other people their receipts next week,” said City of Windhoek chief executive officer, Niilo Taapopi.

He also requested Amupanda and two others to accompany officers inside the municipality office building to count the applications that were submitted by noon. Although no official number of attendees was confirmed, it is believed that no less than a thousand people attended.

Recently, Amupanda and two SPYL members decided to take matters into their own hands and grabbed municipal land in response to reports on how the Windhoek municipality has been dishing out land to councillors, their children and 'special' members of society.
